Fix "Your connection is not private" errors

When a browser shows this warning instead of your site, the SSL certificate is missing, expired, or doesn't match your domain. Here's how to fix it.

Check your certificate status

  1. In cPanel, open SSL/TLS Status.
  2. Look for your domain in the list. A green padlock means the certificate is active. A red or yellow icon means there's a problem.

Run AutoSSL

Dredge issues free certificates automatically through AutoSSL. If your certificate is missing or expired, click Run AutoSSL at the top of the SSL/TLS Status page. It usually completes within a few minutes.

Common reasons AutoSSL fails

  • Domain doesn't point here yet. AutoSSL needs to verify the domain resolves to your Dredge account. Make sure you've followed the Connect a domain guide and DNS has had time to propagate.
  • A .htaccess redirect is blocking validation. If you have rules that redirect all traffic (e.g. to another domain), AutoSSL can't reach the validation file. Temporarily remove or comment out those rules and run AutoSSL again.
  • The www version isn't set up. If your domain is yourdomain.com but www.yourdomain.com doesn't resolve here, AutoSSL may fail for the www variant. Add the www version in Domains or point it in your DNS.

Mixed content warnings

If your site loads but the padlock is missing or shows a warning, your page is loading some resources (images, scripts, stylesheets) over http:// instead of https://. Fix the URLs in your site's code or database to use https://. For WordPress, the HTTPS everywhere guide covers this.
