When you need this
If your domain's nameservers point to Dredge (the default setup from the Connect a domain guide), then cPanel manages your DNS. You'll need the Zone Editor when:
- A third-party service asks you to add a TXT record for verification (Google Search Console, Mailgun, etc.).
- You want to point a subdomain at an external service with a CNAME.
- You're switching email to an external provider and need to change MX records.
Open the Zone Editor
In cPanel, open Zone Editor. Click Manage next to the domain you want to edit.
Add a record
- Click Add Record and choose the type.
- Fill in the fields the service gave you. Common types:
| Type | What it does | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| A | Points a name to an IPv4 address | Pointing your domain at a server |
| CNAME | Points a name to another name | Pointing shop.yourdomain.com at Shopify |
| MX | Tells email where to go | Routing email through Google Workspace |
| TXT | Holds text data | Domain verification, SPF, DKIM, DMARC |
Edit or delete a record
Find the record in the list and click Edit or Delete. Be careful with records you didn't create yourself — some are needed for your site and email to work.
How long changes take
Changes made here usually take effect within a few minutes, but some ISPs cache DNS for up to 24 hours. If you're testing, try flushing your local DNS cache or using a different network.
